Fat Meets Face: Mother-Daughter Duo Launch Paleo Skincare Line
Notes to Editors
Sweet Living Co. is the new handmade skincare company created by Melissa Kimbell, 36, that she runs with her mom, Cathy Shadbolt, just outside of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 2010, the mother-daughter duo began experimenting with old family recipes. They called on knowledge that had been inherently passed down from the tenacious farmwomen that came before them. This sweet team perfected their formulas by blending heirloom recipes with modern botanicals, officially launching Sweet Living Co. in March 2015. With earlier generations of family settling in the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, it was no surprise that local, rustic ingredients would eventually play a part in their venture. But what they accidentally discovered amazed them both; the next must-have Paleo trend in skincare would come straight from the past.
Sweet Living Co. uses high-vitamin tallow in the majority of the products in their new Heirloom Collection. That’s right, they use fat. The tallow they use is derived by gently heating the fat of holistically raised, grass fed, Saskatchewan cattle. It’s extremely rich in antioxidants and certain essential fatty acids needed to maintain youthful skin. Melissa and Cathy slather it all over their faces morning and night. And so do a rapidly growing list of repeat customers across Canada.
“My mom (Cathy) introduced me to the concept of ‘Fatty-Face’ and we tried it almost as a joke, but I quickly realized we were on to something HUGE. Tallow is amazing, there’s nothing like it. I wasn’t expecting that.” – Melissa Kimbell
Sometimes referred to as a “naughty” ingredient by vegetarians and vegans, Melissa believes that tallow is anything but. She explains that while people in tropical climates traditionally used coconut oil to nourish their skin, people from parts of the world where coconuts didn’t grow on trees used tallow.
“What people don’t realize is that tallow is a very old, traditional ingredient in our part of the world. Our ancestors used it in everything from cooking to candles, in times when nothing was wasted. It’s actually a Paleo Superfood uniquely compatible with human skin. It’s even better than coconut oil.” – Melissa Kimbell
Using fat on your face sounds crazy. Ridiculous even. Especially after years and years of “oil-free” products being touted as essential by many big cosmetic companies. But Melissa says women are learning the truth about what’s inside their conventional beauty products.
“I will let you in on a little secret, the key to great skin is great fat! We need to feed our skin with high-vitamin oils. “Oil-free” products tend to be full of water, alcohol and thickeners. Most store-bought skincare products expose women to a long list of unhealthy chemicals masquerading as their botanical equivalents.” – Melissa Kimbell
With women hunting down the newest trends in anti-aging skincare and the increased awareness of toxic chemicals in beauty products, it’s no wonder that Sweet Living Co.’s sales are on the rise. Since officially launching earlier this year, Sweet Living Co. is poised to become the next natural skincare favourite among beauty enthusiasts from far and wide. As their vitamin-packed product line garners a cult-like following, it looks like this old-is-new-again trend is here to stay.
“We already have five stockists in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and that is just since mid-September. The line is flying off the shelves. We were recently featured in a Beauty DIY spread in Dote Magazine. Women are looking for something different. They want natural products that show results.” – Melissa Kimbell
