I’m Melissa Kimbell. In 2005, I had my first child and a BIG light went on. I started to question why skincare had become so complicated and full of ingredients that I couldn’t pronounce. Surely it hadn’t always been that way. I looked for products that would be safe to use on my children and, eventually, myself. There were a few things on the market but not much, and many of those ‘organic’ products were full of harsh additives. There had to be a better way.

I remembered the soothing feeling and earthy smell of homemade Shea Butter cold cream coming straight out of my Gran’s fridge if I ever had a sunburn. At the same time, and in another province, my mother’s spider-senses were tingling. We were both on the exact same wavelength – looking for better anti-aging skincare alternatives and craving a sustainable, more connected and somewhat nostalgic experience.
We began experimenting with family knowledge that had been inherently passed down from tenacious farmwomen living on the frozen prairies, truly organic ingredients and aromatherapy. We always tested our products on each other! We combined modern botanicals with old-school ingredients, like pastured tallow. What we discovered amazed us both. Our formulas far surpassed anything we had ever tried – and, like most women, we had tried many, many anti-aging products over the years.
In 2012, my family relocated to Melbourne, Australia and we lived there for almost two glorious years. In those two years I made a quiet pact with myself that I wouldn’t spend another dime buying conventional cosmetics for my family. It just felt so out of balance with my beliefs and dreams of a healthy environment for my kids to grow up in. I made everything from scratch: the best anti-aging face cream, deodorant, hair serums, lip gloss, blush, face wash, organic fresh masks, body butter, sunscreen, bug repellent, shampoo, the list goes on. I even made laundry detergent. It was fun, rewarding and my small rebellious way of “stickin’ it to the man.” LOL
The experience shaped our lives in unexpected ways. When the day came that we returned to Canada, I realized something very special had happened and Sweet Living Company was born. It’s now a thriving family business that I am extremely proud of. This is a business based on old-fashioned values, a love for Mother Nature, free-flowing creativity, and inspired by some amazing people in my family.
